Manitoba has one of the longest heating seasons in southern Canada and a fuel mix that splits between natural gas and electricity more evenly than the rest of the Prairies. Efficiency Manitoba runs several programs aimed at heat pumps, and the province was first to sign a federal Greener Homes Affordability agreement. For HVAC companies, that creates real marketing opportunities around heat pumps alongside the core furnace business, and a steady job for whoever keeps program claims correct.
HVAC.Management manages marketing for Manitoba heating companies. We're not an HVAC contractor and give no licensing or technical advice; we link to Manitoba's official bodies.
The Manitoba market
Winnipeg dominates Manitoba HVAC demand, with Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler, Portage la Prairie and Thompson as the other main centres.
- Winnipeg is where most competition and ad spend sit. Its suburbs and neighbourhoods are worth tracking separately, because cost per booked job can vary a lot across the city.
- Steinbach and Winkler, in the south, are growing communities where a strong local profile and reviews can win a large share of searches.
- Brandon is the main western centre and usually its own campaign.
- Thompson and the North are remote; availability and response time matter more than price.
Seasons and fuel mix
Manitoba's 2023 Statistics Canada figures put natural gas at 52% of households' main heating energy, with electricity at a notable 33%.
That third of electrically heated homes is the reason heat pump marketing has a bigger place in Manitoba plans than in Saskatchewan or Alberta. A balanced Manitoba plan usually runs:
- fall and winter: furnace and boiler repairs, no-heat response and replacements, with heavy phone coverage;
- late winter and spring: heat pump quotes for electrically heated homes, linked to the current rebates;
- summer: air conditioning and planned installs.
Because the heating season is so long, the spring heat pump window can be short. Briefing vendors early, in late winter, keeps you from missing it.
Regulators a Manitoba marketing manager should know
These are the bodies behind licences and permits your marketing may refer to. Links only.
- The Office of the Fire Commissioner handles licensing and permits for gas and oil burner work, along with boiler, pressure vessel and electrician licensing.
- Apprenticeship Manitoba oversees trade certification.
- WCB Manitoba is the workers' compensation board.
- The Consumer Protection Office handles consumer issues.
Programs your ads may mention
Manitoba has more active heating programs than most provinces, so the program list needs regular attention. As of October 2026:
- Efficiency Manitoba's Air Source Heat Pump Rebate pays $2,000 for a centrally ducted cold-climate unit or $1,500 for ductless, in existing primary residences.
- The Affordable Home Energy Program is aimed at homes heated by electric furnaces, baseboards or electric boilers, with the heat pump provided at no cost through a registered program contractor. We couldn't re-confirm its eligibility details, so link to it rather than summarise eligibility.
- Manitoba's Greener Homes Affordability delivery, through Efficiency Manitoba, offers no-cost retrofits for low- to median-income homeowners and tenants.
- The federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program closed to Manitoba applicants after 31 July 2026.
Confirm every program with the administrator before advertising it. If your company is a registered program contractor, say so only in the exact terms the program allows.
How we'd manage marketing for a Manitoba HVAC company
Manitoba plans need two clear lines in the budget: heating reliability for gas homes and heat pump conversions for electric ones. We'd set separate targets for each in the marketing plan, keep a dated program list reviewed every month, and brief vendors on which claims they may use. The monthly scorecard splits Winnipeg from the rest of the province. If a heat pump campaign is running, we'd also check that the people answering phones know the current rebate terms, because the call is where most program confusion happens. For the full method, see the fractional manager role. Call, text or email to discuss your company.
Frequently asked questions
Which Manitoba heat pump rebates can we promote?
As of October 2026, Efficiency Manitoba lists a rebate for cold-climate air source heat pumps in existing primary residences, with a higher amount for centrally ducted systems than ductless. Confirm the current terms on Efficiency Manitoba's site before advertising, and link to it.
Is there a benefit to being a registered Efficiency Manitoba supplier?
Efficiency Manitoba describes a bonus for registered suppliers on applications that include an F280 heat-load calculation before 31 March 2027. Whether to register is a business decision for you and Efficiency Manitoba; we only help market it accurately if you do.
Do Winnipeg and the rest of Manitoba need separate campaigns?
Usually. Winnipeg carries most of the competition and spend, while Brandon, Steinbach and Winkler behave like their own markets. We'd measure them separately on the scorecard.
