Fractional HVAC marketing management in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia's HVAC market mixes oil-heated homes, electric heat and a large heat pump base, and several Efficiency Nova Scotia programs closed or changed in 2025 and 2026. Keeping claims current is the most important management task here.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Nova Scotia has one of the most mixed heating markets in Canada: oil, electricity and heat pumps each play a large role, and wood still heats some homes. Efficiency Nova Scotia's programs have shifted repeatedly, with an oil-to-heat-pump stream closing in mid-2026, a heating system rebate ending in 2025 and income-based rebates being adjusted. For a fractional marketing manager, the job in Nova Scotia is to target the right homes with the right message and to keep every rebate claim aligned with what's actually open.

HVAC.Management manages marketing for Nova Scotia HVAC companies. We aren't an HVAC contractor and don't advise on technical safety rules; we link to the province.

The Nova Scotia market

Halifax is the centre of demand, with Cape Breton (Sydney), Truro, East Hants, the Lunenburg municipal district and West Hants as the other main areas.

  • Halifax is the largest and most competitive market, where most paid search budget usually goes.
  • Cape Breton is a distinct market with its own competitors and a long drive from Halifax, so it usually needs its own plan.
  • Truro and East Hants sit along the main corridor and can be served from either direction.
  • Lunenburg and the South Shore are smaller coastal communities, where a well-kept Google Business Profile and service-area pages may do more than heavy ad spend.

Seasons and fuel mix

Nova Scotia's 2023 Statistics Canada numbers show electricity at 29% and oil at 28% of households' main heating energy, wood at 6%, and heat pumps as the main system in a quarter of homes.

That mix produces three distinct audiences, each with a different message:

  1. Oil-heated homes: conversion and backup questions, but the federal-provincial grant has closed, so the offer has to stand on its own merits and any financing from licensed lenders.
  2. Electric baseboard homes: heat pump installs, linked to the rebates for new heat pumps.
  3. Homes with heat pumps: servicing, maintenance and eventual replacement, with no new-unit rebate to promise.

Expect raw, damp winters that swing from mild to bitter and back, with the coast usually gentler than inland towns. Changeable weather makes week-to-week call volume jumpy, so judge channels on monthly trends.

Programs your ads may mention

As of October 2026:

With three closures and one change in about a year, Nova Scotia is a good example of why a dated program list matters. Confirm terms with Efficiency Nova Scotia before advertising anything.

How we'd manage marketing for a Nova Scotia HVAC company

We'd begin with a claims sweep: every ad, landing page, profile post and follow-up message checked against the current program pages, with closed programs removed. Then we'd build the marketing plan around the three audiences above, with separate budgets and messages, and split the monthly scorecard between Halifax and the regional markets. Vendors get one scope each through our vendor management service. Call, text or email to talk about your company.

Frequently asked questions

Can we advertise heat pump rebates for replacement units in Nova Scotia?

Be careful. As of October 2026, Efficiency Nova Scotia's heat pump rebates of up to $5,000 apply to new heat pumps and aren't available for replacement heat pumps. Ads aimed at homes that already have one shouldn't imply a rebate.

Is the oil-to-heat-pump program still open?

No. Efficiency Nova Scotia's co-delivered Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program closed to new applicants on 2 July 2026 because funding was fully allocated. Update any ads or pages that still promote it.

Is Halifax the only market worth marketing in?

It's the largest, but Cape Breton, Truro and the Hants and Lunenburg areas are real markets too. We'd measure each one separately so you can see where your drive time and spend pay off.
